I was *totally* surprised when Random Guy At The Communal Microwave was like "well, I'm a spousal hire, and yadda yadda yadda my tenure file." I'd also just said "well, I got hired six weeks ago!" so maybe we were collectively telling our dramatic job-getting stories?

One of the spousal hires in my cohort is like your advisor's husband--he worked in industry, lost his job in an economic downturn, and keeps getting hired to teach labs in places where she's working. So I can see that feeling different than the other way.

I do wonder if there's research! Instead, I will just rely on anecdata from the intarwebs.
