I really, really want to push my students to make these connections, and to stop thinking about Middle Eastern/Arab/Muslim communities as irreducibly other, and make the connections to gender oppression in their experiences. Somewhere else in these lecture notes, I think I had the line "White men do it [i.e., oppress women] because of their culture, too." That's my takeaway.
